Governments in the Sahel are making investments in social protection models that are flexible, scalable, and adaptable to the region’s growing frequency of shocks, such as those brought on by political crises, market disruptions, conflict, and climate change. For social assistance to continue reaching the most disadvantaged families, a dynamic delivery system is essential. Despite short-term disruptions to government social protection programs and delivery systems, a “twin-track” strategy to distributing social cash transfers has allowed the most vulnerable families in Niger to receive consistent and ongoing support as part of a joint UNICEF-WFP social protection initiative in the Sahel.
