A research released in December 2024 by Tree Aid and the World Economic Forum (WEF) estimates that the voluntary carbon market might bring in $28 billion USD for the restoration of degraded areas in the Sahel. Based on an average price of $15.74 per ton recorded in 2023, this estimate assumes a possible sequestration capacity of 1.8 billion metric tons of CO2 equivalent (tCO2e) in the region. The primary beneficiary of this opportunity may be the Great Green Wall (GGW), an effort started by the African Union in 2007.
