The Great Green Wall (GGW) project is still gaining momentum. Beginning in 2007, this African-led initiative aims to plant a “wall” of trees spanning around 8,000 kilometers of the Sahel, from Senegal to Djibouti, in an effort to repair 100 million hectares of damaged land. In addition to tackling more general problems like food shortages, war, and climate-driven displacement, the initiative aims to stop land degradation. The crucial role that women play in accomplishing the objectives of the project has been confirmed by ongoing talks led by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the Centre for International Forestry Research and World Agroforestry (CIFOR-ICRAF), which are funded by the European Union via the Knowledge for Great Green Wall Action (K4GGWA) program.
