The fifth General Assembly of the Sahel Alliance, an international forum for collaboration aimed at promoting development in the Sahel, is being held in Berlin. Representatives from the 27 members of the Alliance, as well as observers from the Sahel nations of Mauritania, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, and Chad, have been invited by Alliance President and Development Minister Svenja Schulze. Non-governmental organizations from the Sahel will be featured in the event for the first time. Svenja Schulze, who is seeking reelection for a second year, succeeded Spain’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, European Union, and Cooperation as President of the Alliance one year ago. Over the next several months, the governments of the Sahel Alliance members and their partners will be debating what kind of help they can provide.
