The EU is considering its options for how to continue its involvement in the Sahel. The first EU Sahel plan was adopted in 2011, and since then, the political landscape has undergone significant upheaval. Notwithstanding these modifications, the extraordinary problems facing the Sahel make sustained involvement in the region all the more crucial. Applying “strategic patience,” the EU and its member states should engage in focused communication and critical discourse in order to find a unified stance based on shared values and norms.
