Local partners should be incorporated in efforts to counter violent extremism in the countries of the African Sahel region. Localized knowledge of actors present in the region could help “devise made-to-measure solutions” to a larger extent than has previously been achieved. Solutions developed from within the communities could contribute to reinforcing the positive effects of human rights education. Active participation of communities would provide chances in view of social cohesion and tolerance, towards diversity, as well as reinforcing important factors such as women’s rights and the curbing of social grievances, thus contributing to conflict mitigation on the basis of traditions and interests rooted in the countries of the Sahel.
