At its General Assembly meeting in Berlin, the Sahel Alliance—which unites the major development backers of the Sahel region—came to the conclusion that new initiatives ought to be started in order to provide millions of children in the Sahel countries with access to education. Currently, forty percent of primary school-age children in the region are not enrolled in school. Terrorist organizations have threatened to close more than 11,000 schools. This will have profound long-term effects on the children’s lives as well as the stability and development of the area. In response, Germany and the World Bank are launching a new education program under the auspices of the Sahel Alliance. New initiatives were announced by other donors as well, such as the European Commission. Additionally, the Alliance members reaffirmed Svenja Schulze, the German Minister of Development, as the Sahel Alliance General Assembly’s president for an additional year.
