Migration in the Sahel: Putting Human Rights and Cooperation on the Map (Istituto per gli Studi di Politica Internazionale/ISPI)

Aurélia Donnard and Roberto Forin of ISPI write in this commentary that while classically, the lens of Europe with respect to the Sahel has been marked by the goal to contain illicit migration. “The migration journey along this route impacts refugees’ and migrants’ physical and mental health,” they state.

As the conflict intensifies, perhaps moving further to the south, and as Covid-19 continues taking its toll, guaranteeing human rights “for concerned individuals” should regain importance:
