The ‘triple burden of malnutrition,’ which includes undernutrition, micronutrient deficiencies, and overnutrition, characterizes the food and nutrition security crisis in the Sahel and West Africa. It notes that even before recent global inflation, food prices in the region were much higher than in comparable economies, identifying poor diets and high food costs as key drivers. The study looks at the cost of healthy diets and the contribution of various food groups to overall expenses using data from 17 countries, showing significant cross-country variation. It concludes that stronger food price data and monitoring systems, along with focused, nutrition-sensitive food system policies, are necessary to improve nutrition outcomes.
