Spanning 7,000 kilometers from the Red Sea to the Atlantic, the Great Green Wall of the Sahel is a revolutionary ecological restoration project. The project’s overarching goals are to prevent desertification, increase agricultural and pastoral productivity, and establish sustainable rural economies, however planting trees is a key component. According to preliminary findings, around 20 million hectares of land were restored in the first twelve years, and regional states’ commitments are increasing. Beyond its positive effects on the environment, the program aims to create jobs, lessen instability, and offer alternatives to migration and illegal activity, highlighting its dual role as an ecological and socioeconomic strategy.
