Education in the Central Sahel—Burkina Faso, Niger, and Mali—is being seriously disrupted by severe violence and humanitarian problems that have been made worse by COVID-19. 650,000 children had been impacted by the closure of 4,000 schools due to insecurity by the beginning of 2020. With over 430 attacks from 2015 to 2019 and over 90 from January to July 2020, armed group attacks on educational institutions are on the rise. There are still significant hazards for both children and teachers as schools resume after the lockdown. These assaults jeopardize fundamental rights, impede regional peace and prosperity, and damage educational access.
