The population’s vulnerability is increased by the Sahel region’s high level of shock exposure, particularly from climate-related and conflict-induced shocks. Additionally, it raises the likelihood that those who are not poor will become so. Every nation in the West African Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU) and Chad carried out a fresh round of harmonized household surveys in 2018 and 2019. Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Niger, and Senegal were among the countries surveyed (Mauritania was excluded). More than previously, these surveys assist in determining the distributional impact of shocks for the area. The main conclusions of the surveys are outlined in five facts in this note. These results can be used to guide the creation of flexible social safety nets throughout the Sahel.
