Between 2020 and 2024, the number of registered refugees and asylum-seekers nearly quadrupled, while the number of internally displaced people (IDPs) in Burkina Faso, Mali, and Western Niger tripled. Forced relocation and mobility limitations restrict access to already limited vital services, worsening structural issues throughout the Central Sahel. These concerns are particularly linked to poverty, food insecurity, climate change, and infrastructure development. Project 21 has persisted in surveying impacted populations in some of the most remote and conflict-affected regions into 2024. The following findings, which emphasize the growing need for protection and solutions in the Central Sahel, also call for more collaboration amongst players involved in development, peacekeeping, and humanitarian efforts.
