Although climate change is frequently viewed as a serious threat to Sahelian peace and development, it can also present fresh chances for communication and resource management that takes conflict into account. The EU is working to connect climate, peace, and security; nevertheless, recent patterns indicate that hard security is receiving more attention and financing than climate-related peacebuilding. ECDPM has looked at how to assist climate-sensitive peacebuilding and the effects of climate change in the Sahel through Search for Common Ground. EU officials and peacebuilding specialists will discuss how to strengthen activity in fragile regions like the Sahel and put environmental peacebuilding at the top of the EU’s agenda at this first of two meetings. Discussions also address implementation issues and how the new EU may better combine security, peace, and climate concerns.
