Over the past few years, food insecurity in the West African Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU) has gotten worse, mostly as a result of wars, climate change, and affordability problems. The Sahel zone is particularly hard hit. In addition to being heavily dependent on food imports and extremely vulnerable to climate change, the security environment is complicated. Food insecurity may have a long-term negative effect on economic development and growth if it is not addressed. Solidarity and focused, coordinated actions by national and regional authorities working with partners are necessary to address food insecurity in a sustainable manner.
