Drought and desertification have long plagued the Sahelian nation of Mauritania. One of the areas most affected by climate change is the Sahel, where temperatures are expected to climb by 3ºC by 2050 compared to the worldwide average of 1.5ºC. In the south of the nation and the oasis areas, agricultural deterioration and soil erosion have lately been exacerbated by extreme temperatures and weather patterns linked to climate change. It is becoming more and more difficult for rural households to make ends meet. At addition to putting further strain on nearby supplies of fuelwood, water, and grazing land, the refugees’ extended stay in Hodh Chargui’s Mbera camp has raised tensions between the host community and the refugees.
