Governments in the Sahel are spending more money on social protection models that are flexible, scalable, and adaptable to the region’s growing number of shocks, which include those brought on by political crises, market disruptions, conflict, and climate change. The “twin-track strategy” provides a way to improve social protection systems in the medium-to-long term while also providing flexibility and agility to meet urgent demands in the short term. This method is part of a joint UNICEF-WFP social protection initiative in the Sahel that supports governments in their efforts to create social protection systems.
