The UN Integrated Strategy for the Sahel (UNISS) calls for focused effort to improve resilience in the Sahel due to a number of complex issues, including inadequate governance, violent conflicts, and agricultural difficulties. By 2080, heat-related mortality is predicted to treble, and exposure to heatwaves is predicted to rise dramatically. In addition to more severe weather, temperatures might increase by 2.0 to 4.3 °C. Although unpredictability and extremes will rise, there will be a modest increase in annual precipitation. A 38–40 cm rise in sea level poses a hazard to coastal regions by causing salty incursion. Because of CO2 fertilization, climate change will increase the yields of rice, cowpeas, groundnuts, and cassava while decreasing those of maize, millet, and sorghum. Adaptation strategies are necessary to deal with these changing circumstances.
