The Sahel and West Africa still have a long way to go in achieving women’s empowerment and gender equality. Although the health and educational achievements of women and girls in the region have improved significantly, much more work needs to be done. In this regard, official development aid (ODA) may play a vital role by galvanizing support for gender equality. The purpose of the article is to draw attention to the region’s existing funding situation for gender equality. It highlights the need to raise the proportion of ODA that supports gender equality goals, assist local women’s organizations as crucial intermediaries in reaching the most vulnerable women and girls, fund the assessment of gender-sensitive programs and education related to them, and encourage the creation of gender-disaggregated data to pinpoint the areas where action may be most successful.
