Over time, these illicit actions erode the state’s capacity to maintain the rule of law, create long-term investment, and foster skill development. The Sustainable Development Goals are impeded by transnational organized crime, which commits crimes such as cyanide and mercury pollution of water and land, sexual abuse and exploitation of smuggled migrants slowing down gender equality, and trafficking in medicinal supplies impeding access to health care. The paper urges a fundamental change in the way Sahelian authorities think through and organize their plans for stabilization and sustainable development. It promotes evidence-based, comprehensive strategies to combat organized crime and provides underprivileged communities that depend on human trafficking with alternate sources of income.
