North Africa has made sluggish progress has made varied degrees of success in building its renewable energy capacity during the last ten years. Among other sustainable resources, wind and solar power present encouraging chances for the nations in the area to support their economies and enhance energy security on both sides of the Mediterranean while also helping with the global energy transition. However, the region has often failed to realize its potential in this area due to concerns about neo-colonial exploitation, misaligned goals, governance, and funding challenges. The Middle East Institute convened an expert panel to examine the present status of renewable energy projects in North Africa. The following questions were attempted to be addressed in the discussion: What challenges do nations in North Africa confront as they move toward a transition to renewable energy? What workable measures may lessen these obstacles and hasten the adoption of renewable energy? How could the geopolitical landscape of the region and the world change if North Africa increased its exports of renewable energy? The event was part of a study funded by the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS).
