Despite making up at least 40% of the agricultural workforce, women frequently do not have significant access to labor, land, financial resources, or agricultural inputs—all of which are essential to their operations and means of subsistence. Given the significant contributions made by women to food production at various scales in West Africa, this scenario presents a serious danger to food security. Due to high levels of aridity and irregular rainfall patterns, women farmers—particularly in the Sahel region of West Africa—are particularly susceptible to droughts and face a significant risk of experiencing a decline in output as a result of inadequate irrigation infrastructure.
