For millions of farmers like her, agricultural output is under danger due to recurring droughts, deforestation, and soil degradation. At a crucial summit on desertification in Saudi Arabia, those concerns are currently the center of attention. The Conference of the Parties discussions in Riyadh, also known as COP 16, is bringing together delegates from dozens of nations with the goal of combating drought and restoring and protecting around 1.5 billion hectares of degraded land by the end of this decade. Thus far, the project has restored almost 300,000 hectares of damaged land and helped 4 million people in 3,400 communities around the area. It helps smallholder farmers, supports women and young children nutritionally, connects watershed planning and land restoration to school meals, and gives communities the tools they need to preserve and enhance food security in the face of frequent shocks.
