Women represent almost 50% of the agricultural sector workforce in the Sahel. Women in the sub-region possess valuable land and water management expertise and a first-hand understanding of climate impacts on local livelihoods. However, their vital contribution to agricultural productivity and food security is often overlooked. Women remain broadly underrepresented in decision-making at all levels, including their representation in national bodies: only 19% of parliamentary seats are occupied by women across the countries of Sahel.
