UNICRI has gathered evidence of the gendered approach of jihadist groups’ messaging and the roles of women and girls in both promoting and thwarting violent extremism via its work to improve institutional and community resilience. In order to mainstream gender perspectives throughout PVE initiatives in the area, the Institute was motivated by this data to conduct additional analysis on these components. In order to develop guiding principles for upcoming PVE interventions, UNICRI gathered data throughout Mali, Mauritania, and Niger in 2023 with assistance from the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA). In order to reach a diverse range of stakeholders, including members of the community, national and local authorities, religious leaders, security specialists, representatives of international organizations, and civil society players, UNICRI conducted extensive field visits.
