The Atlantic Initiative, which was introduced in November 2023 and aims to establish a strong commercial and transportation network between Morocco’s Atlantic coastline and the Sahel, is at the center of Morocco’s regional policy. Morocco has put up an ambitious plan to use its Atlantic coastline to link the Sahel to global supply networks, capitalizing on its strategic location and demonstrated infrastructure building capabilities. Due to the Sahel’s great distances and dispersed population, major infrastructure investments have historically been discouraged, which has resulted in a cycle of underdevelopment. With a comprehensive strategy to regional integration that tackles both the physical infrastructure demands and the larger economic development requirements in the Sahel, Morocco’s strategic infrastructure initiatives stand out as potentially revolutionary.
