Children and teenagers dealing with the humanitarian fallout from the central Sahel crisis, including population displacement, are found in the northern regions of Benin, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, and Togo. Schools and medical facilities are closing or operating at reduced capacity due to an overload of basic services, and people are also juggling public health emergencies and climate-related disasters like floods. In order to meet the humanitarian needs of refugees and internally displaced people and to support the communities that are hosting them, UNICEF will simultaneously strengthen national and local capacity and resilience and ensure emergency preparedness and response in affected areas. In order to provide humanitarian aid to 1.4 million individuals (refugees, internally displaced people, and impacted host communities), including 876,000 children, UNICEF needs $65.1 million. Services related to child protection, education, and water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) are in especially high demand. In order to provide these vulnerable communities with longer-term, sustainable solutions, support for basic services is necessary.
