The Sahel states of Burkina Faso, Mali, Mauritania, Niger and Chad form a region that has great potential, but also faces complex challenges: rising violence, a lack of prospects, noticeable effects of climate change and weak state institutions are hampering their development. The states therefore joined forces in 2014 to form a regional organisation – the G5 Sahel – to tackle the common challenges. Since 2017, they have been supported by the Sahel Alliance.
